Ruma Devi was born and brought up into the middle-class family of Rajasthan. She dropped out of the school at the 8th standard. Rumadevi was very interested in hand art and sewing since her childhood. She got training from the grandmother how was an expert in it.
She got married at a very young age of 16 years. Ruma Devi married into a poor family of Barmer. So, Rumaji decided to do some work for financial help. Initially, She made a group of 10 women from locally and started making cushions, bags, and garments.
Under the guidance of social activist Vikram Singh, They made unbelievable growth and more than 22,000 women joined with her. Next, She started Gramin Vikas and Chetna Sansthan (GVCS), a self-help group. She is the president of this self-help group.
Her handcrafted garment collection displayed at different events like Lakme Fashion Week. She also awarded and honored multiple time at national and international level. In 2019, Rumadevi also featured on the television game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’.

Rumadevi was born in the year of 1989 (age 30 years old; as in 2019). She was born into a Barmer, Rajasthan. Her father was a farmer by profession and her mother died when she was 5 years old. Ruma Devi lived in a joint family and after’s her father’s second marriage, She was brought up by her parental uncle and aunt. Rumadevi has seven sisters and she is eldest among them. Rumadevi follows Hinduism and holds Indian nationality. She is Jaat by caste.
Ruma Devi got married at the age of 16, and in 2012. His husband’s name is Jagdev Sinh. The couple blessed with a son. Due to financial constraints, She could not provide proper medications to her son and he died when he was one and a half years old.

Rumadevi was very interested in knitting and handicraft since her childhood. Also, Her grandmother has taught her embroidery and sewing. Initially, She made a group of 10 women locally with the help of Mahila Bal Vikas Group. She collected Rs. 100 from each member and bought a sewing machine.
Ruma Devi did a lot of hard work in her initial days. Under the guidance of a social activist named Vikram Singh, they started making cushions, bags, and garments. By the time, Rumadevi became the inspiration for other women. Later, more and more women joined them and they made a network of 22,000 women.
On 14th July 1998, Ruma Devi has started Gramin Vikas and Chetna Sansthan (GVCS). It is a self-help group. The main motto of that group was to work for the empowerment of women artisans. This group produces many products in different styles of handicrafts including Kantha Stich, Embroidery, Patchwork, and other fabric printing techniques.
Currently, Ruma Devi is the president of the Gramin Vikas and Chetna Sansthan. She manages all the groups and the organization.

In 2015, Rumadevi’s product collections were presented at the famous fashion-related platform Lakme Fashion Week.
In the interview, she said, “My traditional wear product, my yearning for Barmer can never waver. Its uniqueness has made me what I am today. I can never outgrow Barmer or my desert state. That is why I decided to locate my new shop, launched last year in Jaypur instead of New Delhi”.
The famous fashion designer “Anita Dongre” had called Ruma to showcase her collection in the Lakme Fashion Week (2012). But she rejected the offer as she was not confident to be on such a big platform,
Rumadevi’s work appreciated by the British Patchwork and Quilting Magazine. She had displayed her work in fashion weeks held in London, Germany, Singapore, and many other countries.
According to Ruma Devi, her story is quite similar to the recently released bollywood movie ‘Sui Dhaaga’ (2018).
Ruma Devi got selected for the prestigious Nari Shakti Puruhkar 2018 by the Union Government. She received the award from President Ram Nath Kovind on International Women’s Day. She received certificate and 1 lakh award.
