Mithali was born into a middle-class family of Jodhpur, She did her schooling from the Keyes High School for Girls in Secunderabad. After schooling, She did intermediate graduation from the Kasturba Gandhi Junior College for women in West Marredpally. She started playing cricket professionally from the age of 9.

Mithali always used to play cricket with her brother Mithun since childhood. She also used to play with her brother’s coach Jyothi Prasad when she was just 6 years old. She became fond of cricket by accompanying her elder brother, Mithun to his 6 am cricket coaching class at St. John’s Academy.

First-time coach Jyothi Prasad recognized her cricket skills and suggested her parents concentrate on her. He also suggested them to join National Institute of Sports coach named Sampath Kumar. So, Mithali Raj joined the Sampath Kumar’s girls’ cricket sports glory club for about to months when he noticed her.

Sampath Kumar was so impressed that. He called her parents and said, “This girl is good, I am planning to play her for the country”. Initially, Mithali’s parents didn’t take it seriously. But later they supported her. Under the mentorship of Sampath Kumar, She was selected to play for the state in the state juniors tournament and became youngest to do so.

Professional Career

The First time, Mithali played cricket outside of her hometown when she was selected for the sub-juniors. She traveled the whole country for the matches. Mithali selected for the juniors and senior teams successfully. In 1997’s Cricket World Cup, She was selected as the probable player when she was just 14. However, she couldn’t make it to the team.

After the World Cup, She started representing on the domestic scene first Air-India and then The Indian railway.
