Biography

Hima Das is profession sprinter from India. She holds Indian national record in 400 meters. Also, Hima is the first Indian athlete to win the gold medal in a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championship. Currently, Sprinter Hima is one of the youth icons for youngsters.

Hima Das was born and raised into the small town Dhing of Assam, India. She is the youngest among five siblings in the family. She did schooling from the Public school of Dhing. Initially, Das was very interested in Football. She used to play football with boys at her school. But later she changer her interest towards sprint running by the advice of her school teacher.

In 2018. She competed in the 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold coast, Australia. In July 2018, Hima Das won the 400 m final at the World U-20 Championship. Moreover, She became the first Indian sprinter to win the gold medal at an International treck event. After that, Hima Das represented India at many national and international level events.

Hima Das was born into a small village Kandhulimari which is near Dhing, Assam, India. Initially, Das was very interested in playing Football. Also, She used to play football with boys in her school. In her childhood, She wanted to pursue her career into the Football. But later she changed her interest to sprint running with the advice of her physical education teacher.

Hima Das passed the 12th-grade exam from the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council in May 2018. The same year, She competed for the 400 meters and 4×100 meters relay in 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold coast, Australia. Sprinter Hima reached the final where she completed sixth in a time of 51.32 seconds.

Hima Das won the 400 m final at the World U-20 Championship, 2018. She finished it with 51.46 seconds and became the first Indian sprinter to win a gold medal at an international track event. Also, at the 2018 Asian games, Das qualified for the 400-meter final after clocking 51.00 in heat 1. She made the new Indian national record.

Next on 26 August 2018, Hima Das improved the national award to the 50.79 seconds in 400 m. Moreover, She received the Silver medal for it. On 30 August 2018, Athletic Hima won the women’s 4 × 400 meters relay clocking 3; 28.72 seconds. She failed to qualify for the final of the 200 meters race, due to a false start in semi-finals.

Career 2019

On 2 July 2019, Hima Das won the gold medal in her first competitive 200 m race of the year at the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix in Poland. She completed with a clocking 23.65 seconds.

GOld Medal Winner Sprinter

On 7 July, Hima das won the second 200m gold medal at the Kunto Athletics Meet, Poland. She completed with the time of 23.97 seconds. After six days, Hima won a third gold medal at the Kladno Athletics Meet in the Czech Republic with a timing of 23.43 seconds.

On 17 July 2019, Sprinter Hima das received her fourth gold medal of the fortnight as she won the 200m race with the time of 23.25 seconds. She won the medal at Tabor Athletics Meet in the Czech Republic.

On 20 July 2019, Hima won her fifth medal of the month by winning the 400-meter race in Nove Mesto city of Czech Republic. Incredibly, Hima das won five gold medals in the time period of 1 month.

Becoming the first woman to won 5 Gold medal’s in one month, Hima Das was praised by Indian politicians including PM Narendra Modi and sports minister Kiren Rijiju.

Nipon (Hima’s coach) spotted her during the inter-district meet. He said, “She was wearing cheap spikes, but she won a gold medal in the 100m and 200m. She ran like a wind. I hadn’s seen such a talent in ages”.

The coach pressurised Hima to shift to Guwahati, 140 km away from her village and convinced her that she had a future in Athletics.

Her parents were initially reluctant to let her go but later they agreed.
